Procedures
GYNECOMASTIA
Men are born with mammary glands that do not usually develop as they do in women during puberty. However, some men may experience enlarged breasts due to hormonal imbalances, medication use, exposure to certain substances, or the presence of tumors. This condition is known as gynecomastia, and it can cause the breasts to increase in size either symmetrically or asymmetrically, and unilaterally or bilaterally
The surgical procedure:
If breast enlargement is due to the accumulation of adipose tissue (fat), known as pseudogynecomastia, liposuction will be performed to remove the fat. If the enlargement is due to the growth of the mammary gland, an incision will be made below the rim of the areola to remove the gland. If the increase in breast size is due to both adipose tissue and gland growth, both procedures will be done combined. This is an outpatient procedure.
It is an outpatient procedure.
For this procedure, you will initially be asked to have:
- Breast ultrasound: evaluates whether breast growth is due to fat accumulation, mammary gland size increase, or both.
- Hormonal studies are necessary to determine if there is an underlying cause that requires medical treatment.
